Questions about Safetied are answered below. If yours is not, write to us.
Getting started
How do I set up my certificate?
Enter your name, certificate number and kind of certificate in the profile. If you hold an Inspection Authorization, add its dates. You can change all of it later in Settings. Draw your signature once and Safetied keeps it for the next entry.
How do I bring in records I already keep?
Two ways. Both are in the Add prior records menu in Entries. Settings, in the Archive section, also offers Import prior records (CSV).
- Record from paper takes an entry you already wrote in a logbook.
- Import prior records reads a CSV file.
Entries recorded from paper or imported are attested, not signed. They show where they came from in every export.
What is the date my records begin?
It is the tracking date in your profile. Months before it read “Not recorded in Safetied” instead of “Not active”. Safetied does not read a missing record as a lapse. You can change the date in Settings. It cannot be after today.
Signing
How do I sign an entry?
Review the entry, then sign. Safetied asks you to authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode. If you cannot use biometrics it asks for your device passcode. If the device has no passcode, you cannot sign.
What does locked mean?
A signed entry is locked. Its text and its signature cannot be edited. The confirmation screen reads “Signed and locked”. Safetied keeps the signed copy in an append-only archive and never deletes or rewrites it.
How do I correct a signed entry?
Open the entry and choose to supersede it. Safetied starts a new draft that replaces the original. You sign the new entry. The original stays visible and stays in every export, marked superseded. The sign screen cites 14 CFR 3.403.
Who can sign an annual or a progressive inspection?
Safetied lets only a mechanic holding an Inspection Authorization sign these entries. If the authorization on your profile has expired, Safetied refuses to sign these entries until you renew it and update the date in Settings. You can share the draft with an IA to sign.
Printing
Which label formats can I print?
Four built-in presets: Avery 2163, Avery 5163, full sheet and Brother 24 mm. Avery 5163 and full sheet are free. The others are Pro, along with custom sizes.
Can I print before I sign?
Yes. If you change the entry after printing, the sign screen warns you that it changed since the sticker was printed and offers to reprint.
What is the photo of the applied sticker?
After you put the sticker in the logbook, choose Mark applied and photograph the page. Safetied asks for one photo for each log the entry targets and keeps them with the entry. They go into the inspector packet when you include photos.
What is the code on the sticker?
A QR code for a signed entry. Scanning it opens the verification page. See what the green check means. You can turn the code off for stickers in Settings.
IA activity
What is the activity window?
April 1 to March 31. An Inspection Authorization is renewed in March of each odd-numbered year, and Safetied counts activity for each year of the two-year period.
What counts toward renewal?
Five kinds of activity: annual inspections, major repairs or alterations, a progressive inspection, a refresher course, or an oral test. Safetied reports a year as met when one kind meets its full requirement on its own. Kinds do not add together. Work done under a repair station certificate is excluded.
Safetied shows what your signed records contain, measured against the rule you choose in Settings. Your FSDO decides renewals.
What is the activity sheet and the 8610-1 export?
The activity sheet lists your renewal activity, with columns headed by the §65.93(a) paragraphs. The Form 8610-1 export prefills Blocks 10 and 11 so you can transcribe them onto the official form. Both are Pro.
What does the Form 337 timer do?
When you sign a major repair or alteration, Safetied opens a Form 337 record and counts 48 hours from the signature. Mark FAA copy sent and the timer stops. Entries recorded from paper or imported have no timer.
Pro and purchases
What is free?
Composing and signing entries, a PDF of each entry, printing on the Avery 5163 and full sheet presets, the Today and Needs attention widgets, and the full archive export. The archive export is never behind a paywall.
What is Pro?
Pro adds inspector packets, the IA activity sheet and Form 8610-1 prefill, owner records, other label presets and custom sizes, and iCloud sync, plus the Form 337 timer and IA period widgets. Pro is $49.99 per year, or $149 once for lifetime.
How do I restore a purchase?
Choose Restore purchases in Settings, in the subscription section, or on the Pro screen.
What is apprentice mode?
A setting for people working toward a certificate under 14 CFR 65.77. It tracks calendar months with a countersigned entry and the subject areas those entries cover. Apprentice mode includes Pro without a purchase.
Sync and backup
Do I need iCloud?
No. Safetied works with no network. iCloud sync is a Pro option. Turn it on in Settings and it takes effect the next time Safetied opens. It needs an iCloud account on the device.
What does sync do with entries from another device?
Safetied checks the signature of each synced entry before it adds the entry to the archive on that device. An entry that fails the check is not archived.
Where is my archive?
In the Files app, under On My iPhone (or On My iPad), Safetied, SafetiedArchive. It is readable JSON and PDF.
How do I back up everything?
Choose Export full archive in Settings. You get a zip with every entry as JSON, the signed PDFs, photos, a CSV index, your profile and records, and a README that explains how to check each signature without Safetied.
How do I restore?
Choose Restore from archive in Settings and select the archive folder. If you have a zip, tap it in the Files app to expand it first. Safetied restores entries whose signatures verify and reports any it could not verify.
Verification
What does the green check mean?
That the holder of the key in the code signed exactly the content hash. It does not say who holds the key. The full explanation is on the verification page guide.
Does scanning a code send my data anywhere?
No. The code travels in the URL fragment, which browsers never send to any server.
Regulatory references
Safetied is your own evidence ledger. It is not the aircraft’s maintenance record. The aircraft logbook stays with the owner. The rules below are the ones the app works from.
- 14 CFR 43.9, content of maintenance records: section 43.9
- 14 CFR 43.11, inspection entries: section 43.11. The approval sentence in the app reads: “I certify that this aircraft has been inspected in accordance with (insert type) inspection and was determined to be in airworthy condition”.
- 14 CFR 3.403, falsification of records: section 3.403. This is why a signed entry is never edited and corrections are superseding entries.
- 14 CFR 65.83, recent experience: section 65.83
- 14 CFR 65.93, inspection authorization renewal: section 65.93
- 14 CFR 65.77, experience for a mechanic certificate: section 65.77
- FAA Form 337: Form 337 (PDF)
